The history of gospel music from past to present
The modern day gospel music experience is less than 50 years old. Gospel music is the music of African Americans and is ever changing. From the start it was always met with challenges and today is no different. Many older members of churches think that the music is too wordly. Younger members of the church think that older members of the church just don't understand them. But no matter what, Gospel music is here to stay.
During the periods of 1900-1930's gospel music can be attributed to the social changes that were taking place in the country. Many blacks from the south were starting to move from the south to other areas of the US and bringing with them their form of Gospel music. Gospel music was a form of expression for these people. Gospel music was and still is a thirst for music African Americans can call their own.
The second stage for Gospel music came during the 30's, which is called the Dorsey Era. Thomas Dorsey is referred to as the Father of Contemporary Gospel. His songs combined shouts of praise and emotional fervor with a contemporary style that was very much unwelcomed in some churches throughout the US.
Then came the 40's, when gospel music started to change. During this period of time Gospel ensembles and quartets were organized. These groups began to travel throughout the US. By having the groups travel throughout the US it helped to create a demand for this type of music. Shortly after WW2 blacks started to purchase Gospel records in record breaking numbers. The Rev. Herb Brewater of Memphis established himself as the foremost Gospel songwriter of this era.
Gospel quartets had mass public appeal. The members of these groups were casually attired and presented a more flamboyant image.
The 50's brought more changes in Gospel music. The ensembles were accompanied by a piano or organ. Some of the groups of this era were the Clara Ward Singers of Philadephia, The Staple Singers of Chicago and Albertina Walker of Atlanta. Albertina Walker formed a group called the Caravan that featured James Cleveland, who became a famed composer, conductor and soloist.
Gospel remained very unchanged during the 60's, 70's and early 80's. Then it seemed like gospel music went hip hop. Many rap artists had turned their lives around and found God. The rap group RUN DMC is a good example. After rapping for many years the group turned to rapping about God. During the 90's Kirk Franklin hit the airwaves with Gospel music that was loud and close to wordly.
But all through its history Gospel music is something that African Americans can claim as their own. Gospel music shares its roots in other African American music styles like blues, jazz, and its cousin rock and roll.

The traditional set (the second disc) includes the year's runaway hit, "Never Would Have Made It", from Marvin Sapp. Written jointly by Sapp and Matthew Brownie, the song was a chart topper all year long, winning such honors as the Stellar Award for "Song of the Year", and the "BMI Most Performed Gospel Song of the Year", along the way.
Byron Cage ("Royalty"), Regina Belle ("God Is Good"), Ricky Dillard ("The Light"), Dorinda Clark-Cole ("Take It Back") and others, including Vanessa Bell Armstrong, Maurette Brown Clark and The City of Refuge Sanctuary Choir, round out the traditional collection.

Music Review: Donald Lawrence's 'The Law of Confession' CD
Donald Lawrence
The Law of Confession, Part I" (Verity)
Even the most devoted gospel music listener sometimes gets tired of repeated encouragement to "hold on" and "be strong" in the midst of various troubles.
Songwriter, producer and all-around hitmaker Donald Lawrence has skilfully avoided that rut on his second solo effort: "The Law Of Confession, Part I." And he does it by putting the power for a victorious life on the tip of the listener's own tongue.
"Confession" is a live recording filled with the giving and sharing of new ideas. The setting is Lawrence's home church, Chicago's Living Word Christian Center. The album's theme was inspired by the pastor, Bill Winston, who briefly details his teaching in a video included on the CD.
The album starts with the swinging "The Word of the Lord," which typifies the joyful sound of this album. It's built upon squealing horn hits, synthesizers, live drums and top-notch vocals from the backing group Lawrence calls his "Co.," including Dewayne Woods and Latrice Pace of thae Anointed Pace Sisters. Each song takes complex ideas and, in a feat of songwriting prowess, boils them down to catchy lyrics. Biblical terms are defined and even scripture citations are sung without missing a beat - no worn-out cliches here.
Much like Lawrence's 2004 solo effort: "I Speak Life," "The Law Of Confession, Part I" is therapeutic and filled with empowering numbers like the funky "Back II Eden" which has already earned a well-deserved slot in regular gospel radio rotation. "Confession" is a treat for the soul.
CHECK THIS OUT: "Let the Word Do the Work," is a fun and gritty New Orleans-style foot stomper. Note a rapper inserts a prayer for lower gas prices. Let's hope it works.

Dove Award nominee list includes familiar names, songs by Terry DeBoer
Perennial favorites Chris Tomlin and Natalie Grant are in familiar positions among Christian music artists in the running for the 2009 Dove Awards, sponsored by the Gospel Music Association.
Tomlin, winner of three consecutive Doves as the industry's top male vocalist, is nominated in the same category once again.
The worship music singer-songwriter, who performed last month in Van Andel Arena, is the lead nominee with six other nominations, including overall top artist, song of the year and for top CD and song in praise and worship groupings.
Grant, also a three-time female vocalist winner, is up for the same award. Her CD "Relentless" and one of its songs, "I Will Not Be Moved," also are in line for honors.
Grand Rapids native Marvin Sapp repeated last year's nomination as top male vocalist, but has also broken through with a nod for artist of the year.
Sapp, pastor of Lighthouse Full Life Center in Grand Rapids, won seven Stellar Awards last month in connection with his CD "Thirsty" and its smash hit "Never Would Have Made It."
In line to reprise his 2008 Dove as artist of the year is pop-rock hip-hopper tobyMac (Toby McKeehan), who performs as part of "Winter Jam" on March 12 in Van Andel Arena.
"It's unexpected and quite the honor," Toby, 44, said when reached by phone Friday before a concert date in Columbia, S.C.
"I think it's a testimony to how gospel music in general continues to stretch and cross boundaries ... it's a good day."
Earlier this month, he won a Grammy Award for his latest release, "Alive and Transported."
Nominees in 42 music and related categories were announced Friday during a Nashville news conference.
A newcomer making a splash this year is singer-songwriter Francesca Battistelli. The rookie artist netted five nominations, including female vocalist and top new artist. Her hit, "I'm Letting Go," is nominated for two awards. Battistelli is joining tobyMac on the March 12 concert bill in Grand Rapids.
Artists with several nominations include Casting Crowns, Steven Curtis Chapman, Fireflight, Third Day and Michael W. Smith.
The Gaither Vocal Band, which performs March 14 in Holland, is in the running for two Dove Awards.
For the first time, music fans will have a part in voting for two categories: artist of the year and new artist of the year. Online ballots from fans will account for a third of the vote totals; the remainder are cast by members of the Gospel Music Association, mostly industry-connected professionals. Online voting begins Thursday and concludes April 23, the day of the Dove ceremonies at the Grand Ole Opry.
See voting details and a complete list of nominees at doveawards.com.
The award ceremonies, with hosts to be announced, return to live television this year on the Gospel Music Channel.

Helen Baylor - Sea Of Forgetfulness
I Stand Before You Guilty And Unworthy
how Can I Be Forgiven And Holy
and I Know I Break Your Heart
but You Promised I Could Start All Over
and All The Things I've Done
you've Placed Them Each And Every One
chorus
into The Sea Of Forgetfulness
you've Placed All Of My Sins
for I'm The One Who Keeps Reminding You
over And Over Again
into The Sea Of Forgetfulness
as Far As The East From The West
seventy Times Seven
you've Forgiven Me
and You Keep Cleansing Me
and Placing My Sins Into The Sea Of
forgetfulness
you Welcome Me With Open Arms Of Mercy
in Spite Of All I've Done
you Still Keep Loving Me
and I Only Need To Ask
and You Erase All My Past Forever
my Debts Have All Been Paid
and They've All Been Washed Away...
chorus
its You're Unfailing Love That Covers Me
and All My Mulititude Of Sins
its Your Steadfast Love
that Keeps Reminding Me That I'm Forgiven
chorus

Helen Baylor - Can You Reach My Friend
Verse 1
i Got A Call From An Old Friend
we Laughed About How Things Had Changed
but I Could Tell Things Weren't Going As Well
as He Claim
he Tried To Hide His Feelings
but They Only Gave Him Away
the Longer I Listened,
the More I Kept Wishing That
i Knew The Right Words To Say
can You Reach My Friend ?
bring His Searching To An End
lord, I Know You Love Him
help Him Understand
can You Reach My Friend?
you're The Only One Who Can
help Him Give His Heart To You
verse 2
we Talked For More Than An Hour
i Smiled When He Mentioned Your Name
i Said That I Knew You
i Told Him The Difference You Made
but He Never Thought He Would Need You
but Maybe He's Changing His Mind
as We Said Goodbye Lord
he Told Me That I Ad Found
something That E'd Like To Find
can You Reach My Friend?
you're The Only One Who Can
lord, I Know You Love Him
help Him Understand
can You Reach My Friend?
bring His Searching To An End
help Him Give His Heart To You
maybe He's Ready Tonight
lord, He Said That He Might
need To Call You
help Him Give His Heart To You
i Got A Call From An Old Friend
we Laughed About How Things Had Changed
but I Could Tell Things Weren't Going As Well
as He Claim
he Tried To Hide His Feelings
